Meet the Creative Tech: Lee Jones
Q: What is your background in design, creative technology, wearables, etc?
I’m PhD student in digital media at the Creative Interactions Lab at Carleton University. My research is on DIY toolkits for prototyping soft interfaces and interfaces, so I’m always interested in trying out new tools and toolkits!
Q: Where did the idea for the colour-changing cushion come from?
I live in Canada where it’s cold for most of the year. I was interested in prototyping a stool for my balcony so that I could get some fresh air and stay toasty too. This stool cushion warms up the seat and changes colour to say “hot seat” when it’s ready. I love how magical thermochromic fabrics are, and how slowly and gracefully they change colour.
Q: What was your favorite part of working with LOOMIA components?
I love how flexible and polished the LOOMIA Parts are. Compared to other heating pads I’ve used before, LOOMIA’s is easier to integrate into prototypes and you can’t feel that there’s anything underneath your fabric, whereas I find others crinkle and make sound. The adhesive also keeps components from shifting around underneath fabrics. I love how I was able to focus on the craft part of the project because the components were so easy to use. Most of my time was spent sewing the cushion and making the stool.
Q: What aspect of your project do you hope inspires others?
I’m really excited to see what folks make with thermochromic fabric! There are so many crafting opportunities, and how you can use it like you would other fabrics. Add a heating pad and you have a magic fabric that changes colour on demand.
Q: Favorite feature of the cushion?
I’ve been using it in the mornings to sit outside while I enjoy my coffee. I think the LOOMIA heating pads will enable more individuals to get outside even in cold weather.
Self-promo time! Where can we find your stuff?
